I’ll be frank, these articles scare me to death. If everything were to become virtual, it would destroy our economy. It doesn’t make sense to me why people would want to give up real life for fake life.
Maybe I’m silly and I don’t understand the satisfaction of being virtual, but I don’t think it can bring the satisfaction that a relationship can. The day real, face to face contact ends is the day that the world will come to a stand still. I’m using that phrase as an idea rather than as a reality (because face to face communication will never be TOTALLY dead) but it seems to be taking over more and more rapidly.
On a completely different note, I think Skype is an incredible tool. It’s like a more personal version of a phone call. 20 years ago, who would have thought that people across the world could connect with just a few clicks? It’s incredible.
What’s your take on websites like Secondlife (and even Neopets for kids)? Are they connecting or destroying us? Both?
